I had tried Atkins, South Beach, no meat, meat only, water and bologna and every other fad diet available. I was tired of losing 20 lbs in a few months and gaining it back in another few months. So I closed the fridge, turned away from the cupboard, and focused on anything other than my hunger. I think it was when I caught myself chewing on my leather Adidas basketball shoes that I gave that one up.
I did, however, gain new respect for Gandhi. And Cesar Chavez.
Then, about two years ago, my high school son decided he needed to remake himself if he wanted to get a D-1 basketball scholarship. His world-class trainer recommended The Zone.
About 10 years before, I’d heard the then-barely-known Dr. Barry Sears on the Dennis Prager radio show. I had gone out and bought his first book. It seemed sensible, but ultimately, like many diets, was just too much trouble.
Yet I wanted to support my son, so I determined to renew my efforts. I figured the way to make it work for me was to hold onto the basic idea, but this time to keep it simple.
Hey, all guys know the value of simplicity. It’s our collective middle name. Ask your girlfriend. Or if she’s not around, your wife.
So while my son went for the more detailed approach, I looked at the core.
Every time you eat, simply balance it in the following way:
- One portion of protein (meat, eggs, fish, soy, beans)
- One portion of vegetable fat (avocado, including guacamole, olives, nuts)
- Two portions of complex carbs (fresh or frozen vegetables, fruit)
These portions are determined in the most straightforward way possible – by size. Each portion should be no bigger than the palm of your hand. Pretty simple.
Don’t eat:
- Simple carbs (flour-based, such as bread, cake and pasta)
- Potatoes
- Rice
- High-fat or sugar (ice cream, soda)
Try to avoid:
Wow. I’m not a big ice cream guy, but I do like it. Potatoes, carrots and soda I could live without. Rice and bananas would be more difficult, as would bread and pasta. But I was willing to give it a shot, especially since Sears makes the clear caveat – if you fall off the wagon, no big deal. Just get back on.
I did it, and guess what. I ate much more often, and much less each time. When going out, I’d ask for extra veggies instead of potatoes. I’d have fruit and cheese for dessert. I began carrying around a bag of dried cranberries, some beef jerky, a jar of cashews. I quickly developed new eating habits. It was fun, like a game, and I did enjoy the more frequent eating.
As my energy started to rise, the weight began to disappear. 17 pounds in the first month. And it’s stayed off, even though I’ve begun eating rice occasionally and a banana here and there.
Not only that, but it’s far easier to get up in the morning, with less sleep. Plus an unexpected but huge side benefit – my almost daily untreatable headaches have become 25% of what they’d been for the last 30 years. And the ones I do have are far less intense and much more easily treated.
17 pounds were exactly what I needed to lose. Follow this variation of The Zone, and I’ll bet you’ll not only lose the weight you want, but feel great in the process.
